Honoring a Legacy of Generosity

During the public viewing period, the nonprofit whose episode receives the most combined likes across Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook by January 1st at noon (CST) will receive the largest donation from a special charitable fund entrusted to Dr. Mel by her cousin, the late Leila Meacham, the New York Times bestselling author of Roses, Somerset, Dragonfly, Tumbleweeds, April Storm, and more. Leila began this fund with the first profits from her breakout novel Roses as a way to give back and support meaningful causes.

Through the Seeing the Good mission — anchored by a domain Dr. Mel purchased about 15 years ago —this legacy now finds its perfect home.“Seeing the Good is more than a series—it’s a movement,” said Dr. Melanie Ross Mills. “It’s a reminder that hope and healing are happening in our neighborhoods. By sharing these stories and honoring Leila’s legacy, we’re inviting everyone to look for the good around them—because that’s where real change begins.”

Leila Meacham & Dr. Melanie Ross Mills: A Legacy of Love, Mentorship, and Purpose

Leila Meacham (1938–2021), a retired high school English teacher from San Antonio, Texas, found literary success in her seventies with her debut novel, Roses—an instant New York Times bestseller. She went on to publish several acclaimed novels, including Tumbleweeds, Somerset, Titans, and Dragonfly, capturing the hearts of readers around the world with her sweeping, character-rich stories.

Beyond her literary accomplishments, Leila’s legacy continues in the deeply personal bond she shared with her cousin, internationally recognized Relational Health Expert, Dr. Melanie Ross Mills. More than family, their relationship was rooted in profound love, mentorship, and mutual respect.

With no children of her own, Leila embraced Melanie as the daughter she never had, lovingly calling her “Baby Sprite.” In return, Melanie cherished Leila as her “Mama Sprite” — a second mother, mentor, and guiding light. Leila encouraged Melanie to follow her dreams, trust her inner voice, and take bold steps toward her purpose. She nurtured Melanie’s growth both personally and professionally, instilling in her the courage to lead with authenticity and heart.

Leila often said, “When I’m gone, you will be my voice.” It wasn’t just a sentiment — it was a calling. She entrusted Melanie with the responsibility of carrying forward her legacy, a reflection of the deep trust and love they shared.

Today, Melanie honors that promise by managing Leila’s social media presence and continuing to engage with her loyal readers. She also furthers Leila’s legacy through Seeing the Good with the Leila Meacham Fund, which supports charitable causes that reflect the values and spirit Leila held dear. This work is not merely a duty, but a labor of love — a living tribute to a woman whose influence continues to inspire.

Through Melanie’s devotion, Leila’s voice lives on — not only in the pages of her novels, but in the hearts of those touched by her life, her words, and the meaningful bond they shared.
